Detty is Different
Detty is a mentally handicapped child. She was simply born different. Some things are not as easy for her as for other kids. Yet, she has many super talents and is full of bravery and love. No wonder she is the apple of our eyes and that she is my favourite sister! Come and learn in what ways she is different and why it is fantastic that she is also part of our lives!
Why is her story important?
When a child with special needs is born into a family, the focus is mostly on the hardship, and less on the values they bring into our lives. This book is a reminder of those values.
Many families with mentally handicapped and special needs children fall apart because of the constant challenges, care burden, the lack of sufficient and efficient support systems, exhaustion, and hopelessness regarding the future. The siblings are also affected and due to the increased attention on the special needs child, may experience emotional neglect, and a lack of support from the overburdened parents, and may put aside their dreams and desires to avoid adding more problems. These families are often socially isolated, and these children - more often than not - are tucked away from the eyes of society.
However, focusing on what makes these beautiful souls wonderful and unique, and on how they enrich our lives, may help build resilience in these families, and more sensitivity and care in our societies towards these children and their families, even if it is just a small book, just a quiet whisper.
This book is based on my sister, and I present it to you all with much love.
